Music

Nothing new to report on the status of  The Last Mailman: Neither Rain, Nor Sleet, Nor Zombies

When the book finally comes out, I was planning to list the “soundtrack.”  I’ve been holding on to most of it for well over a year now because I want to be able to talk about the influences and what parts the songs accompany what without being too spoiler-y.

I don’t listen to music while I write.  I need ABSOLUTE SILENCE.  I need to concentrate on what I’m seeing in my head.  I need to listen to what the characters are saying.  But when I’m not writing, I might hear a song and say to myself, “yes, that totally fits the mood I’m going for.”  And from then on, it gets added to the “movie in my head.”  Music is so emotional so if I can find something  that accompanies a scene, I think it makes me a better writer because I’m diving into that emotion and feeling more connected to the story and more receptive to what the characters are saying.

As I’ve been working on TLM2, I have found one major connection so far.  I’m writing a bottle scene of one guy’s experience from being bitten to dying.  I planned all along for this chapter to be part of the story, but I have had so much trouble writing it.  Stopping and stalling.  Jeopardizing the whole project just because I didn’t want to experience this.  But then I found the right song.  Now as I’m writing the scene (finally), I hear this song playing over it and I’ve made the connection I needed to get through this difficult section.

So thanks to Other Lives for their awesome song, “Tamer Animals.”  It really helped me out.
